BlackBerry Trackball Replacement Kit with Tools

By: sourceman

I take several calls a week from our customers that have to do with defective trackballs on their blackberry devices.  Over time, trackballs may become worn or defective due to a variety of reasons.  It is one part of your blackberry that gets used all the time, so dirt and grime may get in there and the trackball is not as sensitive as it used to be.

We at BlackBerrySource just got the new trackball replacement kit in that is compatible with the BlackBerry Bold 9000, the BlackBerry Tour 9630 and the BlackBerry Curve 8900.  This kit will cover the replacement needs of the trackball for the newer model BlackBerry devices.  For the older model BlackBerry devices, we also have a trackball replacement kit for those as well.  See our website for more details.

The new trackball kit comes with a variety of tools to take apart your blackberry and of course, the new trackball.  The newer BlackBerry devices trackballs are a little more tricky to replace and require a little more work on the users part.  You have to take apart your BlackBerry in order to change out the trackball if you have one of these newer model BlackBerry devices I listed up above.  It is not hard and most users can do it themselves.  We do highly recommend that before you do any work on your BlackBerry, you check with your wireless carrier to see if your BlackBerry is still under a warranty.  If you try to take apart your BlackBerry, it will void any warranty from your carrier you may have had, so check first!

Our customers have been very satisfied with our trackball replacement kits as they are up and running again in no time with their BlackBerry devices.  There is a lot of documentation on the web about taking apart your BlackBerry.  Make sure you are visiting credible websites with this documentation.  It is a good idea to look at several to make sure they are all doing the same thing.  I have provided an instructional video below which I did on replacing the trackball in a BlackBerry Curve 8900 by using this new kit.

Good luck and be careful taking apart your BlackBerry.  We all know how valuable these devices are to us and we don’t need any more downtime than is necessary.

Have a good day!

OtterBox Defender Case for the BlackBerry Bold 9700

By: sourceman

We just got in the new OtterBox Defender Case for the BlackBerry Bold 9700

The OtterBox Defender Case has three (3) layers of protection for your Blackberry Device.  As you can see by the above photographs, these three (3) layers really help protect your BlackBerry from bumps, scratches, shocks, dings and dust.  The OtterBox is even water-resistant, so you can use your BlackBerry in light rain.  Although, I would not submerge your BlackBerry in the OtterBox as it is not water proof.  You have access to all your BlackBerry devices ports and buttons when the Blackberry is inside of it.  Since I have been in the business of accessory support for our company, I have yet to see a better protecting case for your BlackBerry device.  This case is perfect for those that work out in the elements all day like construction workers, emergency personal, military personal and all sorts of other professions.  I would definitely want one of these cases in these situations.  Oh yeah, they are also great to take with you on your family vacation to the beach!

To see more details about this case, check out this video I did.

BlackBerry Tour Fuel Holster by Case-Mate

By: sourceman

Blackberry 9630 Fuel Case

We recently received in an exciting new accessory item for your BlackBerry Tour 9630.  It is the new Fuel Holster made by Case-Mate.  What is great about this BlackBerry holster is you can charge your BlackBerry Tour 9630 while on the go, all while it is clipped to your belt, purse, coat or backpack.   It provides you with an additional 250 hours of standby time and up to 9 hours of   additional talk time beyond the standard BlackBerry battery in the Tour 9630.

The holster is built around a 2300mA lithium polymer battery.  It has a solid build to it and is very nicely constructed.  There is a rubber like texture surrounding the case which is good for gripping purposes.

Where I think this holster can come in really handy is if you travel a lot and like watching or listening to media while on an airplane or a long bus trip, this holster will be perfect for your BlackBerry Tour and will get you through the long periods between charges.

For additional information and to see this accessory in action, see this video overview I did on it.

RedFly Mobile Companion

Revolutionary external keyboard & screen for your PDA

C7-Redfly-Mobile-Companion

RedFly Mobile Companion

Turns your BlackBerry or Windows Mobile device into a virtual laptop/workstation

By BerryMeister

I set up and tested one of the REDFLY Mobile Companion C7s using my BlackBerry 8900 and everyone who saw it was very impressed! We’ve been selling and supporting external keyboards for BlackBerry for well over 5 years, starting with the Flexis keyboards for the BlackBerry 857/957. But I have to say that the REDFLY Mobile Companion is by far the easiest to install and the most capable external input device we’ve ever carried.

USB & VGA Ports

The device looks like a typical netbook or sub-notebook with a keyboard and screen in the familiar clamshell package. It’s remarkable for what it DOESN’T have. It doesn’t have a processor or memory. Instead, this ingenious device has just what the PDA is lacking – a larger screen and keyboard along with full size USB ports and a VGA output port. It also includes a large capacity battery that can power the device and charge the PDA while it’s being used. It works with several of the newer model BlackBerry devices AND with Windows Mobile 6 PDAs.

The beauty of the design is that nothing gets stored on the device and virtually nothing needs to be maintained or updated, unlike a traditional laptop that is expensive to support and maintain and could present a security risk by virtue of sensitive data being stored on board.

Installation is very simple. On a BlackBerry, you would use the built-in browser to download and install a small application called REDFLY. If necessary, you could also install the application using a PC and BlackBerry Desktop Manager.

Redfly Power button

Next, press the power button on the REDFLY, then connect the USB sync cable that came with your BlackBerry to one of the USB ports on the REDFLY. Finally, click on the REDFLY icon on your BlackBerry and choose “Start REDFLY.” That’s it!

Within a few seconds the screen on the REDFLY perfectly matches the screen on your BlackBerry, only now you have a much larger screen and keyboard to work with. The keyboard layout on the REDFLY closely matches that of your BlackBerry device, including the Red and Green keys as well as the Menu key. There are also special icon keys for functions like Home screen, Email, calendar, etc.

Touchpad for easy scrolling

The touchpad on the REDFLY works like the touchpad on the newest BlackBerry devices, meaning that it allows you to scroll left, right; up and down (similar to the way the trackball works). However, when you’re using the BlackBerry’s built-in browser, you can move smoothly in a true graphical mode.

What I found especially compelling was using the device with an external USB keyboard and an external monitor plugged into the REDFLY’s VGA port. The implementation of the external keyboard was very logical and worked very well.

800x480 pixel display & keyboard

Thus, the REDFLY can be used “barefoot” to enhance the portability and increase the usability of your BlackBerry device. Or you can plug in an external keyboard and optionally an external monitor and use the device in an office setting, basically replacing a laptop or workstation for enhanced productivity. The included power supply for the device provides operating power and allows you to charge your BlackBerry at the same time. While it may seem counter-intuitive, this actually fulfills the elusive “dream” of turning your PDA into a virtual laptop or small workstation.

For corporate users, the elegance of this design is that it allows the BlackBerry device or Windows Mobile PDA to do what it does best, provide a secure data path while avoiding the expense of additional charges for services such as VPN support or tethering charges.

The cost of providing expensive laptop support can be reduced or in many cases, eliminated. As REDFLY points out, today’s PDA devices are nearly as powerful as many laptops were a few years ago. So for staff who may not need a lot of computing power, but are more interested in basic email and a few applications, this may be exactly what they need in an elegant small package.

OtterBox Defender Case for the BlackBerry Curve 8520

By: sourceman

Yesterday I was speaking to one of our customers on the telephone and he was looking for a extremely protective case for his new BlackBerry Curve 8520.  The customer is a public works employee who worked in the water department division of a large city.  He spends a lot of time out in the field and is around heavy equipment and machinery.  He told me he drops his BlackBerry Curve 8520 on a regular basis and is getting worried about doing damage to it.

I advised him of the OtterBox Defender Case for his BlackBerry Curve 8520.  I said the case would be perfect for his BlackBerry and would provide it with great all around protection.

I really like this case.  Everything I wrap a Blackberry up in one, it makes me want to throw my BlackBerry at a wall or something because it feels like it is so secure and indestructible in there, but please do not throw your BlackBerry against the wall :) !!!

I would watch this video I did if you want to learn more about this great product.

Thanks Everyone,

The 3 P’s

The 3 P’s

What’s that? You ask, the first P is the most important, Power.  This Blackberry Car Holder has a power supply that with charge your device while it is in the cradle.  As long as your car is turned on your device will be getting the charge that you need so you do not run out of battery life.  The second P is Plug.  This simple to use Blackberry Holder, has the quick set up by plugging in the cradle into the cars cigarette lighter.  The third P is Pivot.  The Blackberry Car Holder can be pivoted to sit in your car in whatever position you would like.  If you need more room this cralde comes with an extra arm for adding length.  What makes this cradle so much different from other cradles is a few things.  It does not have to be hardwired into your cars system for charging.  It does not have loose wires that can get tangled up.  It does not need to be mounted to anything.  When looking for a Blackberry Car Holder just remember the 3 P’s Power, Plug, and Pivot.  We here at BlackBerry Source are pleased to announce the Power in Car Cradle for Blackberry Tour 9630.

Using the Freedom Universal keyboard 2 with your BlackBerry

Freedom keyboard & Removable stand

Freedom Universal keyboard & removable stand

By BerryMeister

As the senior tech at eAccess Solutions, Inc. one of the most common questions I get asked involves helping a customer set up and use an external keyboard with their BlackBerry. Over the years (I just celebrated my 5th year with eAccess) we’ve sold and supported several different keyboard devices, but by far the best, most effective and most popular has been the Freedom Universal keyboard 2 which we call the Bluetooth keyboard for BlackBerry.

Though they are not difficult to set up, it can be a frustrating experience for those not familiar with some of the application permission settings on the BlackBerry. I’m always surprised when customers don’t realize that part of what distinguishes our firm from many others on the Web, is that we provide technical support for the products we carry.

What I find interesting in talking with our customers about the Freedom keyboard, is how quickly they become dependent on the device. So much so, that if it ever stops working (or they change to a new BlackBerry device) getting the keyboard working again is an urgent priority. Partly this is because many of us have become completely dependent upon (spelled ‘addicted to’) our BlackBerry devices to stay in touch with our “world.”

Ironically, a lot of BlackBerry “purists” can’t possibly imagine the need for an external keyboard. I used to feel that way myself – however I’ve since discovered another term called “BlackBerry Thumb” which can result from overusing the small keyboard on the device. What the Freedom keyboard provides is a nearly full-sized folding keyboard that fits easily in a shirt pocket or bag. I find it compares very closely to the keyboard found on my Dell™ laptop in terms of size AND typing action.

While the native keyboard on the BlackBerry is great for a quick response to an email or text message, if I’m trying to type a longer response or I have a lot of emails to respond to or text to enter (like addresses) it is really worthwhile to be able to break out the Freedom 2. I also like the fact that it includes a handy pull-out tray that holds your device while you’re typing.

Freedom Universal keyboard & stand

Freedom Universal keyboard & stand

In talking with our customers, I have found that those folks using the new BlackBerry Storm really appreciate the tactile response of a mechanical keyboard as compared to the native Touchscreen™ keyboard found on the Storm. We have found that the product works best when the Storm is used in landscape (horizontal) mode. The reason is that the Storm simulates a standard keyboard in landscape mode, as opposed to the SureType™ keyboard (2 characters per key) that the Storm simulates when it’s in portrait (vertical) mode.

I also like the fact that the developers of the Freedom Universal 2 keyboard have done a great job of continuing to develop their driver software. Not only have they managed to keep up with the flurry of new BlackBerry models being released, but their software really responds quickly allowing you to type at burst speeds and have the keyboard keep up with you. A lot of other keyboards tend to lag behind a fast typist.

So, if you find that your typing demands on your BlackBerry have increased beyond a simple quick email response, you might want to seriously consider the Freedom Universal 2 keyboard. Believe me; your thumbs will thank you!  :  )
